Shading Help Please *warning* slightly adult content

OKay I know where to shade. and I know how to shade on paper. The weird thing is I can't do it on photoshop. It's driving me mad.

If anyone can find me some. I would appreciate it. Yes I know the face is pretty fooked. I am aware that the proportions aren't right. It is a 5 minute sketch so hence the roughness.

does this look better or worse. in terms of shading??

UM. again, is this better? used a different brush

Okay friend, you need a value bar.

a value bar is a simple tool used to show the value of black and white and all that is inbetween.

Here, I made one to show you: http://usera.ImageCave.com/thewoods/value bar.jpg

Now, to do a good black and white piece, you will need to incorporate ALL of these values. I can't think of anything you'd ever draw that would only incorporate a few...

you need to also keep in mind where the shadows will fall. To do this you will need to locate the position of the light source. It may be that you have multiple light sources and that is a BIT more difficult, but not much.

Once you determine where the light source is, you can determine where the shadows will be. Not to hard.

here's something on painting shadows: http://painting.about.com/cs/paintin.../a/shadows.htm

Now, to do it digitally. First, are you using layers? if not, you should be, it's faster and nicer. ALOT nicer.

second, how to shade:

It's really simple. Once you've layed down the DARKEST shadows, you will then proceed to lower the opacity on the brush and add shadows from there.

lowering the opacity will make the color softer, though, as you keep painting the same spot, it will get darker and darker, like traditional water colors!

So pen in your DARKEST shadows FIRST, and then go back with a lighter opacity and add shadows where needed.

DON'T think that the entire person needs to be shaded. You need white areas just as badly as black areas!

I'm so sorry I couldn't provide an image to help you with, but if you need some, I'll do it traditionally and upload it.

the way i shade on the a drawing program is i use a brush with very low opacity, and that would make up most of my drawing's body,
then i would use a brush with tiny pixel, and turn up the opacity and do the outlines.

i never drawn with photoshop though, but im sure it's similar (i draw on the FB graffiti app)

and btw, a few pics have been deleted for violation of terms xD
someone reported you? haha
