welcome bot

i thought this was cool...
i registered at this forum (don't worry. it's gfx, no competition)
and when i registered...a bot created a thread in the welcome section saying
"welcome ian!"
and the post contained the rules and whatever.

t makes it so much more personal.
and that way the newbies won't have to do it themselves.
cut leeching by like 10% i'd say xD

i know cheesie can do bots xD he had the faerie crossword one.
it would be so cool.

But I like welcoming real people, not just their automatic thread
I always show them the link to the rules, so they're either stubborn or ignore me when they don't, and most thank me for the welcome and say they have/will now read the rules.

no, people can post on it too.
the bot just creates the thread.
it's easier than the newbies creating.
and that way we make sure they all get threads.

Maybe when they sign up one of the steps is "Would you like an automatic thread or would you like to create your own?"
Then if you tick your own there'll be an annoying message (like when you're a newbie) that's like "You haven't welcomed yourself to the community yet!"

Oooh, I love that idea! Since the bot doesen't really say anything personal about you, ticking create your own lets you write everything. But the 'You haven't welcomed yourself' thing would convince people to do it.

That's a great idea! I love the "step" idea, Firestarter!
It would be cool to have. Maybe that could be the first page they're directed to after they register.
And maybe if they don't tick that option they would have to stay in that forum until they post an introduction.
I dunno.

I still have the first PM I ever received. It was my welcome...that had all of this. The rules, the rankings all of that. While I know where it's all located in the forums now...I keep it for memories I'm so nostalgic.

I still like the idea of newbies getting a PM that tells them all of this privately. Rather than pointing out in public like they are being singled out with a spot light... just because they are new doesn't mean they don't want to be nice members.

Lately we haven't had too much trouble with them (thankfully).

haha. that would be really funny.
i'd get so annoyed that i'd introduce myself.
but i'm not a newbie anymore, so yeah..

haha. it'll be funny if there are like mods or lvl 3's who get that message cuz they never introduced them self
i'd crack up so much.

True, im in a gfx forum that also does that. A thread is better than a personal message (:
